Audit Finds Problems with Evidence Under Former Keokuk Sheriff

DES MOINES (AP) - An audit has found problems with the way a former sheriff kept evidence in Keokuk County.

The state auditor's office investigated the sheriff's office, finding that former Sheriff Ron George didn't maintain a secure evidence room and that evidence and seized property were kept in unsecured locations.

The report says case files and evidence logs weren't available to identify pieces of evidence.

The investigation began after current Sheriff Jeff Shipley discovered items missing from the sheriff's office, including a thermal-imaging camera valued at $8,400.

The audit also says George was seen destroying records before he left office in December.

A telephone call placed Friday to George went unanswered. A telephone message left for Shipley was not immediately returned.
