AP - Legislative leaders say they plan to quickly push through a bill that offers emergency grants to Iowans adversely affected by the winter storms.

Thousands of homes and businesses lost power last weekend after
snow and ice damaged utility lines across the state, and lawmakers
said they need to be prepared in case more storms hit Iowa this
week.

"It could be a very bad situation,'' said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy says it could be a bad situation and they need to prepare for the worst.

The bill was expected to be approved by both chambers Wednesday
morning and sent to the governor in the afternoon. It would provide
$1 million in aid to counties where the state has issued emergency declarations. More than half of Iowa's 99 counties have received such declarations.
