DES MOINES (AP) - A Des Moines Register poll shows support for Democratic Gov. Chet Culver slipping to 50 percent and nearly half of Iowans saying it would be a good idea if former Gov. Terry Branstad ran again.

The poll, detailed in a copyright story Saturday night on the Register's Web site, shows Culver's approval dropping from 60 percent last year. His approval has dropped five percentage points since April.

Branstad says he's considering joining six others in seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Culver, and the poll indicates 48 percent of voters think that would be a good idea. The poll shows 70 percent of Iowans look favorably on his four terms in office, ending in 1998.

The poll was conducted Monday through Wednesday of 803 Iowans age 18 and older. It has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
