CEDAR RAPIDS - These frigid temps aren't only uncomfortable, they're dangerous.
Frostbite can occur in just 30 minutes if you're not careful. Be on the lookout for symptoms such as red skin that turns pale and hard, numbness and pain, such as throbbing or a pins-and-needles feeling.
Frostbitten skin needs to be warmed up gradually by running it under warm -- not hot -- water or wrapping it in blankets.
Young children and the elderly are most susceptible to frostbite.
Paramedic Specialist Susan Fenton says, "Their bodies aren't as strong and as healthy so they need to take the extra precautions: staying inside, not going out in the weather as much, wearing extra layers and things like that."
Fenton adds, if you don't have to go outside, don't. It’s not worth the risk.
