DES MOINES (AP) - A man accused of hitting and dragging a Des Moines police officer allegedly had a blood-alcohol count more than two times the legal limit.

According to police, 24-year-old Irving Cartagena registered an alcohol level of 0.173.

Investigators say Sgt. Larina Blad had stopped the driver Thursday on suspicion of speeding, but he sped away, running over Blad with a rear tire and dragging her.

Sgt. Misti Allison said Blad was able to give dispatchers the car's license plate number.

Blad requested that Iowa Methodist Medical Center not release information about her condition.

Cartagena is charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving while barred, assault on a police officer, interference with official acts with serious injury and assault causing willful injury. He is being held at the Polk County Jail on $22,000 bond.
