CEDAR RAPIDS — After Everett Lindsay allegedly whipped a police officer with a chain, he laughed and told other officers all police should die, police said.
Cedar Rapids police Officer Robert Boyer, 39, is recovering after the assault just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. He had a cut and bruising on his head, but was able to help take the suspect to the ground and make the arrest, police said.
It is the 31st assault on a Cedar Rapids officer this year, according to police statistics.
Lindsay, 32, no known address, is charged with assault on a peace officer with intent to inflict serious injury and interference with official acts with injury. According to a criminal complaint, Lindsay told other officers that he hoped Boyer would die.
“As they were walking to the squad car, (Lindsay) started laughing,” Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said.
Boyer and Officer Larry White were dispatched at 12:09 a.m. Tuesday to the area of 16th Avenue and Trent Street SW after a pizza delivery driver reported a suspicious person, police said. The tipster said a man was pushing a cart of stereo equipment.
The officers didn’t initially find anyone, but then saw Lindsay in the parking lot near the Theisen’s store, according to the police report. He was pushing the cart and matched the description police were given.
From the squad car, Boyer told Lindsay to stop, but Lindsay yelled profanities at the officers and kept walking. Boyer was walking behind Lindsay to catch up with him when he noticed something in Lindsay’s hand and told him to put it down. Instead, police said Lindsay turned and swung a chain and padlock at Boyer, whom he struck repeatedly.
Lindsay was taken to the Linn County Jail, where he remained Tuesday in lieu of $16,500 bond. Boyer was taken by ambulance to St. Luke’s, where he was treated and released.
Hamblin said investigators will try to determine if the stereo equipment was stolen, using serial numbers.
Last month, Lindsay was arrested and charged with trespass causing damage for living in a foreclosed home in the Time Check neighborhood. He was granted pre-trial release on July 17 by District Associate Judge Russell Keast and placed under the supervision of the Department of Corrections, according to court records.
