DAVENPORT (AP) - Authorities have determined that a Davenport police officer was justified in fatally shooting a man last week on the Centennial Bridge over the Mississippi River.
Officers responded Friday morning to a call from a cafe that serves meals to the needy and found that a volunteer had been hit in the head by 39-year-old Steven Mallory of Davenport.
Officer Cliff Anderson spotted a man matching Mallory's description on the bridge, and attempted to stop him. Anderson used a Taser, but Mallory attacked him and knocked him to the pavement.
During the struggle, the officer fatally shot Mallory.
Scott County Attorney Mike Walton determined that there was no other reasonable course of action.
He says Anderson was not only able to save his own life, but he possibly saved the lives of others.
