UNI Plans Legal Steps to Recover Uncollected Fees

By Becky Ogann

CEDAR FALLS (AP) - The University of Northern Iowa's president says he's taking legal steps to recover about $255,000 in unpaid tuition and fees from families that got discounts after giving incorrect addresses.

In a release Wednesday, Benjamin Allen said the university will try to recover funds from about nine families that allegedly used the addresses of others so their students could pay a lower rate to attend Malcolm Price Laboratory School in Cedar Falls.

The Iowa state auditor earlier this month said an audit had found discrepancies in registration fees charged to the families, including the former school director's family. Allen says the university will act on recommendations from the auditor's office to develop new policies.
