Study: 51% of Homes in C.R. Flood Zone Completely RebuiltBy Justin Foss, Reporter
CEDAR RAPIDS - New numbers released Wednesday are detailing the state of flood recovery in Cedar Rapids.
For weeks, Americorps VISTA workers have been working to get a handle on just how far the city is along in the recovery process. They now say after walking up to each and every one roughly 5,093 flooded homes, 51 percent are completely rebuilt. Just more than half of the homes are back, that takes into account everything from the homes swept off their foundation, to those barely touched by the flood waters. Still, more than a year past the flood, 284 have yet to even be touched. "It's sad to go down through there and that house hasn't been touched, and that one too. I can name ten on my block and the next block over that haven't been touched," said flood victim Annie Pahl. What the study doesn't say is how many of those untouched homes are marked for demolition. The study further breaks down the homes by how hard the flood hit them. However, data provided on the Americorps VISTA website on Wednesday only portrays 1374 of the 5093 inspected. Of the green carded homes where city inspectors said only limited damage happened, 96% are completely rebuilt. Of the yellow carded homes where the city said the home had some damage, 11% are rebuilt. Yet, where inspectors said there was only some damage, 108 remain untouched. Of the red carded homes where significant damage happened, only 6% are done. The city says it plans to cross-reference this study with its own numbers to get more details.
