DELAWARE COUNTY- A fire burned a marina to the ground and destroyed more than a million dollars worth of boats inside. The call came into the Ryan Fire Department at 3:22 Wednesday morning. Six fire departments fought the fire at the Lake Delhi Marina along Highway 13 near Ryan in Delaware County. It took them five hours to battle the blaze.
By the time the flames were out, the marina's showroom and shop was in ruins. Customers are stopping by to see what, if anything, is left of their boats.
"I'm sure it'll be in the millions. There were a lot of boats in the facility, both customers and ours," said Rusty Peck, owner, Lake Delhi Marina. Darryl Discher's was one of them.
"Hopefully insurance will pay for it. But I don't know if it'll pay for the full amount or not," said Darryl Discher, boat owner. He was supposed to pick up his boat to take his family out on the lake.
When firefighters arrived, glass was flying and fire had engulfed the building. By the time it was out, they could see what little was left.
"Just metal. All the tires and motors and plastic had been melted and there wasn't much left. Just metal," said T.J. Carrothers, Ryan Fire Chief.
"Got here and I was just amazed. I didn't think there would be this much devastation."
The two damaged buildings are about 15,000 square feet total. All that's left is the front of one building and the very back of the other building. Peck says he will rebuild at this location and new boats are on the way. His customers understand that tragedies happen and are grateful no one was hurt.
"We have to go on. It's no one's fault. You can't cry over spilled milk."
Peck says the marina offices are still open and he'll operate out of his old facility on Lake Delhi. The State Fire Marshal is on the scene Wednesday to investigate the cause of the fire.
