Culver To Prepare State Budget

By Jon Ellis, News Producer

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES - The State Department of Transportation predicts the money from Iowa's gas tax will fall this year for the first time in 26 years.

Incoming governor Chet Culver could propose raising the tax in his budget.

Culver has already said he will "very likely" call for a higher state cigarette tax.

Culver will take office at the end of next week.

He'll have less than two weeks to submit a budget plan to lawmakers.
