CEDAR RAPIDS - Hundreds of classic cars are rolling into Eastern Iowa to kick off the 45th Annual Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet. The event is drawing drivers and enthusiasts from around the globe. "I've been to Texas, I've been to South Bend, I've been to Omaha, it'll be great to have it here," says Studebaker owner Kevin Roberts.
This is the first year Iowa has hosted the international Studebaker meet. "It's taken a lot of work," says Chairman Alan Meeker. "We started planning for this four years ago."
Meeker built a stretch Studebaker with two 1952 trucks. "1952 was the 100 year anniversary of the Studebaker. 1953 is the 50 year anniversary of Ford, so the Studebaker has been around for a long time," he says.
More than 500 Studebakers of every model year and style are registered for the event. And it's not just drawing interest from Iowans. People from across the U.S and six countries are planning to attend. "More of them are going to come out of the woodwork that you didn't know were here. I'm hearing more and more just here locally that are just coming out, just for this purpose," says Roberts.
As more wheels roll into town this week, Roberts says it's easy to understand why these unique cars deserve a special spot in history.
The concourse will be held Thursday from 9AM to 4PM free of charge at Hawkeye Downs. It will be a chance for fans to view the hundreds of cars on display.
