CEDAR RAPIDS - Employees of a grocery store chased a woman who stole steaks from the meat department Thursday morning.
Police said the woman took the steaks from Hy-Vee, 1556 First Ave. NE, just before 9 a.m. and ran southeast across First Avenue East into a residential neighborhood. Officers caught the woman in the area of Third Avenue and Park Avenue SE.
The meat was recovered, police said.
The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to Mercy Medical Center.
"She had some an arm injury from earlier and had some other medical concerns they were going to take care of," Lt. Tobey Harrison said.
Harrison said the value of the meat was under $50, so police were pursuing charges of fifth-degree theft and interference with official acts.
That Hy-Vee store typically has a police officer stationed at the door during business hours, but one was not present Thursday morning. Store management declined to comment.
Harrison didn't know why the woman stole the meat.
"Desperate times," he said. "You just never know."
