DES MOINES (AP) - State regulators have adopted new rules that increase fees and enact educational requirements for tattoo artists.
The rules adopted Wednesday by the Iowa Board of Public Health increases fees for tattoo artists from $40 to $75. The fee for tattoo parlors increase from $25 to $100.
The new rules go into effect Jan. 1.
New tattoo artists will be required to prove they have graduated from high school or passed an equivalency test. The rules also ban tattooing in homes.
Administrators say the rules only apply to new tattoo artists and that any current licensed tattoo artist will not have to comply with the new educational rules or ban on home tattooing.
Officials say the rules are the first substantial update of Iowa's tattoo regulations in 20 years.
