CARTER LAKE (AP) - A Carter Lake police officer is recovering after officials say the police chief accidentally shot him at police headquarters.

City Attorney Joe Thornton says Police Chief Shawn Kannedy was discussing firearms with two officers on Wednesday when Kannedy's weapon went off. Sgt. Dan Driver was hit in the torso.

Driver was taken to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., where he was reported in good condition.

Kannedy was placed on administrative leave.

The Pottawattamie County sheriff's department is investigating the incident.

A similar incident happened in Robins, back in November of 2004. Robins Police Chief Lyle Rusk, 56, was accidentally shot in the neck by Robins Police Sergeant Carol Currans. Currnas was handling a nine millimeter handgun at Robins City Hall when the gun accidentally discharged, hitting Rusk.

The shooting parallyzed Rusk and he was forced to retire. He died four years later of heart disease.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office did rule the shooting accidental.
