Rare Moth Spotted in Fayette

Upper Iowa University

By Becky Ogann

FAYETTE - A rare and colorful moth was spotted at Upper Iowa University's Fayette campus.

It is the Cecropia moth (Hyalophora cecropia), also known as the silkworm moth. It is the largest of all North American moths, has a colorful wingspan of 5 to 6 inches, and is rarely seen because it typically flies only at night. An adult Cecropia moth only lives for about two weeks after emerging from the cocoon, with its sole objective being to mate and lay eggs.
