DES MOINES (AP) - The Blank Park Zoo has a few new additions this holiday weekend - make that about 150 new additions.
The zoo announced Thursday that it has added a 700-gallon fresh water aquarium filled with about 150 African cichlid (SIK-lid) fish to its Discovery Center. The small, colorful fish come from Lake Malawi, on the borders of Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania in southeastern Africa.
Zoo animal curator Chad Comer says the fish can be yellow, orange, blue, white or striped. The zoo has recreated a rocky habitat for the fish. Experts say the fish can live for between seven and ten years.
