Local Inmates Receive their GEDs

By Becky Ogann

CORALVILLE - They may be serving time for a variety of reasons, but Tuesday, several offenders donned a cap and gown to receive their GEDs.

Thirteen of the 75 offenders who completed Kirkwood's GED education program attended the annual graduation ceremony held at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville.

Some said they were proud to finally reach this milestone in their education.

"I'm in prison but I've achieved something I've wanted to achieve for a while. Couldn't do it on the outs but I guess now I'm here I can do it," said Bo Garland.

Garland told TV9 he wants to use his degree to help him get a job as an engineer when he gets out of prison. He believes it will help him provide for his family.
