2 Pulled From River in Des Moines, 1 Dead

By Daren Sukhram

DES MOINES (AP) - Authorities say a construction worker suspended from a crane managed to rescue a woman from the Des Moines River in downtown Des Moines, but a man also pulled from the water drowned.

The two, both believed to be in their 60s, were in a small boat that went over the Center Street Dam on Tuesday afternoon.

Crews used a crane from the nearby construction site in the rescue Tuesday afternoon. The worker was strapped to the end of the crane's line and lowered into the river just below the dam. He hung onto the woman until a rescue boat could pull her to safety.

The woman was later reported in stable condition Mercy Medical Center.

The man was pronounced dead after being pulled from the water downstream.
