Morning Storms Leave Damage in Buchanan Co.

By Becky Ogann

BUCHANAN COUNTY - In rural Buchanan County, an early Friday morning thunderstorm produced straight-line winds reaching nearly 80 miles per hour, and that sent a tree crashing into a home.

When Penny Dake heard the wind, she says she got scared, grabbed her children and grandchildren and headed for the basement.

"I'd hear a big boom and then it was just like a shake," said Tara Dake.

"At first I thought it was just like a straight-line wind but I really think it was a tornado just by the sound," said Penny Dake.

When the winds stopped, the Dake's went outside to survey the damage.

Penny immediately called her husband Kim who left for work just moments before the winds wreaked havoc here.

"When he pulled up, his hand went over the mouth and just shook his head," said Penny Dake.

The Dake family fondly referred to their old tree as Grandma Willow. Penny always said if this tree fell down it would claim her kitchen, and unfortunately, it looks like that's happened on Friday. This is what remains of a roof that used to cover the Dake's farm machinery.

"I just hope the house is all right because we have no insurance to help pay for anything."

So, this family will rely on each other to clean up what this wicked storm left behind.

Luckily, no one in the Dake family was injured by the storm. While Penny thought there might have been a tornado, there are no reports of any in that area.
