MARSHALLTOWN (AP) - The Marshalltown school district wants to collect on unpaid school lunch tabs. The school board has approved a proposal to hire a collection agency to collect money from past due school lunch accounts.

The district wants to recoup nearly $26,000 that is owed by families. The collection agency will keep up to 35 percent of what it collects.

Food service Director Ann Feilmann says tab for unpaid school lunches now totals $25,900, including $6,000 this past year.

She says one family that has three or four children owes $1,700.

Feilmann says letters were sent home and attempts were made to call parents. She says denying a student a meal is not an option.
