AP - Governor-elect Chet Culver wants a close look at the state's commercial property taxes.
He says he'll name a bipartisan commission to come up with ways to revamp the system, with action likely in the upcoming legislative session.
Culver says the issue has been talked about for a number of years, and it's time to act.
According to a study by the Taxpayers Association, Iowa's commercial property taxes in urban areas are the fifth highest in the nation, and rural commercial property taxes were in the top ten.
Culver says he wants recommendations from the commission on his desk by January 16th.
Culver offered his proposal on Tuesday at an annual legislative seminar for reporters and editors organized by The Associated Press. He's outlined the details at a symposium of the Iowa Taxpayers Association in Des Moines Tuesday afternoon.
