AP - Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard says the Cyclones have a new coach.

Pollard told The Des Moines Register that Texas assistant head coach and defensive co-coordinator Gene Chizik has been hired.

Iowa State has scheduled a 6 p.m. news conference in Ames to introduce the new coach.

Chizik landed at the Ames airport Monday morning. Pollard says Iowa State was “challenged to get him,” and “he's the real deal.”

Chizik worked as an assistant coach at Auburn, the University of Central Florida, Stephen F. Austin and Middle Tennessee State before joining the Longhorns staff in 2005.

No. 17 Texas is 9-3 this season.

Chizik is a 1985 graduate of Florida. He and his wife, Jonna, have twin daughters, Landry and Kennedy, and a son, Cally.
