IOWA CITY - Competitive cyclists from all over gathered in Iowa City today for the 2006 Jingle Cross Rock.
Bragging rights and $13,000 in cash and prizes are pretty good motivation but children like Olivia well, that's more of an inspiration. "Olivia had cancer,” says her mom, Roberta Ogden. “She was diagnosed in 2004. She had AML Leukemia."
And today, hundreds of cyclists are pedaling as hard as they can for her and all the children at the Children's Hospital of Iowa. "The cause is awesome," says cyclist Spencer Haugh.
At any given time there are well over 100 children at the Children's Hospital of Iowa. Every penny raised here today goes directly back to the hospital. The goal is $25,000. Not only does it serve as a way to fund treatment but it also gives families like Olivia's hope.
Roberta says, "We just pray that it doesn't return and that's everybody's hope but more importantly, we hope there's a cure and that's what money like this will do."
But simply writing a check isn't their style, this group is all about getting involved while giving back. "It's not something you expect but thank God for the hospital and for folks like this," adds Roberta.
Spencer says, "It's fun for us and it's good for them."
The Jingle Cross Rock continues tomorrow at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. The first race starts at 9a.m.
