CEDAR RAPIDS - Three months ago, Cedar Rapids police officer Tim Davis was assaulted while investigating a robbery.
Davis, whose four-year anniversary on the force is this Saturday, fought for his life after the assault. He spent 39 days in the hospital before being released May 7.
Three teens are awaiting trial in connection with the armed robbery that led to the assault, with Jose Rockiett, 17, charged in the assault. Rockiett's trial is set for July 25.
On Thursday, Davis' wife spoke publicly for the first time since the beating with her husband by her side. Officer Tim Davis accompanied his wife Stephanie to the podium wearing a protective helmet needed for his brain injuries. This is the first time we've shown him since the March 29th assault.
Stephanie Davis thanked police and the public for both moral and financial support and told reporters the road to recovery is a long one. Officer Davis is still going to physical therapy session four times a week. You can watch the full video above left.
"Let me first say that time's ultimate goal is to be able to return to work as a police officer...his career has been his dream for as long as I have known him...however, it is not in his near future to return to the Cedar Rapids police dept...Tim has no memory of what happened on March 29th and doctors are not sure he will ever have a memory of the event," Stephanie Davis said.
Following Davis' statement, Police Protective Association members explain that funds raised beyond what's needed by the Davis family will go to aid future officers injured in the line of duty. Officer Davis' wife took leave from her job as a school teacher to help him recover, but will return to teaching in the fall.
Officers with the Cedar Rapids Police Protective Association did not disclose any figures on Thursday. But the Gazette tallied results reported by nearly 20 major events in estimating the figure at around the $100,000 mark.
