JOHNSON COUNTY - A crash on I-380 in Johnson County closed the north bound lanes for several hours on Monday morning.
Emergency crews responded at 9:30 a.m. to a crash about a mile north of the I-380/I-80 interchange near Coralville.
The Iowa State Patrol says an SUV headed south crossed the median and hit oncoming traffic.
Dawn Kannenberg had just left Iowa City with her sister-in-law, when she saw a vehicle fly over the median and into her lane.
"And it was like, why is this truck flying over and the dirt, you could just see the dirt flying out," said Dawn Kannenberg, witnessed accident.
An SUV hit a pick-up and a car right in front of Kannenberg. She says she had goose bumps knowing how close she was to a major accident.
"That was just two seconds - two or three seconds. That could've been us," said Kannenberg.
"All the people were actually conscious and alert. In these types of crashes, which is a good thing for us to see because that doesn't happen a lot," Trooper Robert Conrad, Iowa State Patrol.
Aircare landed on the scene to take one of the victims to the hospital. Drivers headed south trying to look at the scene caused another accident.
"We had one vehicle slowed down, another vehicle ended up rear-ending that vehicle because he was looking over, his admission, at what was going on," said Kannenberg.
Kannenberg says she'll stay alert and aware the next time she's on this stretch of road, knowing an accident can happen in seconds.
Crews were able to clear the scene in a couple of hours. All victims are receiving treatment at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. No word on their conditions.
