CEDAR RAPIDS - Hundreds of homes were without power in southwest Cedar Rapids after a series of transformer box explosions. One of those explosions happened on 6th Street Southwest between 19th and 20th Avenue.

Alliant Energy says an equipment failure caused a spacer cable to come down. That caused a power surge that triggered four or five boxes to explode around 9 o'clock Sunday morning.

Alliant says the outageaffected between 300 and 500 customers.
