CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) - A Cedar Rapids police officer who was beaten unconscious after he responded to a mugging hopes to return to duty.

Officer Tim Davis has been hospitalized since March 29.

Police Chief Greg Graham, who visited Davis on Tuesday at St. Luke's Hospital, says the officer may be released as soon as next week. Graham says Davis wants to eventually return to the force.

Authorities have charged Jose Rockiett, 17, with willful injury causing serious injury and first-degree robbery. His trial is set for July 27.
