Illinois Reports First Cases of Probable Swine Flu

CHICAGO (AP) - Illinois health officials say they've sent a specimen from a Chicago child who may have contracted swine flu to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing.

The CDC will make the final determination on whether Illinois' cases match the swine flu outbreak in Mexico.

Kelly Jakubek is a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Public Health. She says she doesn't know if Illinois has yet received its own testing kits to make such determinations.

Chicago school officials shut down an elementary school today after the child contracted a probable case of swine flu, and the state health department says other cases are suspected in Illinois.

Attendance dropped at the Joyce Kilmer Elementary School before the student was found to have a probable case of swine flu.
