IOWA CITY -- A standing-room-only crowd voiced concerns about potential staff cuts to the Iowa City School Board at its meeting Tuesday night.
The district needs to cut about $6 million from its budget, mainly due to cuts in state funding. By law, the district has until April 30th to notify staff if they will be laid off.
One proposal for the cuts includes leaving 14 open positions unfilled. The district is also considering cutting some library staff to balance its budget.
Tuesday night, a line of teachers, students and parents spoke out against the lay offs. Most argued library staff is essential for learning. Others argued specifically against cutting specialty teaching positions.
