Local Swine Flu Test Comes Back Negative

CEDAR RAPIDS - Officials at St. Luke's Hospital have confirmed to KCRG.com that a test for swine flu on a patient has come back negative.

St. Luke’s sent the specimen to the University Hygienic Laboratory, based at the University of Iowa’s Oakdale campus. The laboratory is in charge of public health testing and has gone into its incident command mode. Six-hundred test kits have been sent to doctor's offices and hospitals as a result of the swine flu outbreak in several states.

As of today, 64 cases were reported in California, New York, Ohio, Kansas and Texas.

A phone line is operating for Iowans with questions about swine flu. The Iowa Concern line, at 1-800-447-1985, is staffed by employees of Iowa State University Extension, including a nurse available to answer medical questions.
