New Safety Measures at Deadly Dubuque Crossing

DUBUQUE - New safety measures have started in front of a Dubuque school where a student died.

In September 2007, a car hit and killed Lauren Schmidt, 15, as she was crossing the street in front of Dubuque Hempstead High School.

Her death prompted a group of students to petition the city to install this traffic light in front of the school.

Cold weather last fall and winter slowed the installation process.

On Monday, district administrators were on hand as school dismissed to help students and drivers adjust to the new traffic control.
