CEDAR RAPIDS - The Linn County Board of Supervisors approved a 2-year lease for the Steve and Barry’s site at Westdale Mall on Wednesday.
Supervisors wanted to remain in the current 17 store fronts leased at Westdale. However, mall owners have not agreed to extend the current temporary space leases beyond April 30th.
The old Steve and Barry's location, which closed recently due to company bankruptcy, has different owners than the rest of the mall.
The location, which was built as a Montgomery Ward store, has 102,000 square feet of space. That is double the amount of space the county is currently leasing from the main Westdale Mall owners.
The county moved more than 200 employees and many offices to the mall after flooding damaged a number of county buildings last June.
County staffers discovered that county leaders could save nearly $140,000 a year by concentrating all of the offices at the former clothing store location.
Right now, the county is paying Westdale Mall $28,000 a month for the space.
The mall had donated space from July through the end of October.
