Glenwood School Tax Fails When Absentee is Tossed

By Becky Ogann

GLENWOOD (AP) - A school tax levy in Glenwood in southwest Iowa has failed after an absentee ballot that would have decided the election wasn't counted because it wasn't in the proper return envelope when it was mailed.

The vote in the Feb. 3 election ended tied at 434, which means it failed.

Mills County Auditor Carol Robertson says the absentee ballot was postmarked by the deadline but didn't arrive in time to be counted at the time of the election. It was to be counted on Tuesday.

The proposal would have given the district the authority to levy additional property taxes or income surtaxes, raising about $750,000 over 10 years for textbooks, technology and to reduce class size.
