CEDAR RAPIDS - Some Republican lawmakers are proposing legislation that would give citizens the right to petition for a recall vote of local elected officials.

Republican House Minority leader Kraig Paulsen sponsored the bill, and House Republican representatives Renee Schulte and Nick Wagner co-sponsored it.

Wagner tells TV9 their constituents told them they want a speedier process.

"I suppose it gives people a quicker grievance solution than waiting until the next election period. You look at supervisors, city council, school boards - those are all four year terms, and if you've got someone that's acting not in good faith, sometimes four years they can do quite a bit of damage," said Wagner.

Under the legislation, 20% of voters from the previous election would have to sign a petition.

If there are enough signatures, then there would be a recall election.

The bill, if passed, does not allow voters to recall state level officers.
