CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) - Heinz Quality Chef in Cedar Rapids plans to layoff 35 employees at its facility in southwest Cedar Rapids.
Company officials with the Pittsburgh-based company cited the poor economy for the move, which was announced on Friday.
Heinz spokesman Michael Mullen says the layoffs are needed to lower costs and improve efficiency at the Cedar Rapids facility. Mullen says it's not clear if the layoffs will be temporary or permanent at this point.
According to Priority One, an economic development organization in Cedar Rapids, the Heinz Quality Chef plant employs about 260 people.
The plant produces frozen soups, stews, sauces and meat fillings.
