ATLANTIC (AP) - State environmental officials say a glitch at a utility plant in Atlantic in western Iowa led to an estimated 400,000 gallons of wastewater being released in the East Nishnabotna River.

City officials reported that the discharge may have begun Thursday evening and was stopped early Friday.

They say they would have gotten notification earlier from an alarm system, but that system seemed to also have been affected by the glitch at Atlantic Municipal Utilities.

No other details were immediately available.
