BENTON COUNTY - A Cedar Rapids woman and her fiance have died after the car they were in crashed into a creek near Atkins, just east of Cedar Rapids.
Andrea Kaye Andrews, 28, of Cedar Rapids and David Dewayne Wadhams, 26, also of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday night after Andrews' vehicle went off the road and ended up in a creek.
The Iowa State Patrol says Andrews lost control of the vehicle while traveling eastbound on Highway 30 around 5:30 p.m. Her vehicle crossed the median near 33rd Avenue, crossed the traveled portion, flipped, and entered Morgan Creek. Andrews died at the scene. Wadhams died at a local hospital.
Right now authorities aren't sure if the crash is weather related. The state patrol says it does not believe alcohol was a factor.
Benton County Sheriff's deputy Dave Upah tells TV9 he was driving eastbound on Highway 30 at the same time and saw the vehicle spin out of control and end up in the small creek. Upah says he was on scene just seconds after it happened, but that he couldn't get to the people inside because the car was upside down in several feet of water.
