Police say Dubuque Man Started Apartment Fire

By Becky Ogann

DUBUQUE (AP) - Court documents say a 41-year-old Dubuque man used liquid pre-shave to start his apartment on fire because he thought he was going to be evicted.

Police say Todd Shaffer turned himself in to police less than two hours after firefighters responded to the blaze on Dec. 15. He was arrested on a charge of first-degree arson and pleaded not guilty earlier this week.

Court documents say that Shaffer told police he intentionally set the fire by pouring a flammable liquid pre-shave on a pile of clothes.

Damage from the fire was estimated at about $8,000, with most of the damage concentrated on Shaffer's unit.

No injuries were reported.
