Culver says State Employees Unlikely to get Raises

  • Photo
DES MOINES (AP) - Gov. Chet Culver says state government employees will probably not get any raises in 2009 and that it's possible some state departments could merge.

In copyright story in The Des Moines Register, Culver says the Iowa's budget problems were to blame.

Culver tells the Register that some of his ideas will not be popular among state workers but says Iowa has avoided layoffs unlike other states.

Culver also says that disaster recovery efforts and balancing the state's $6.1 billion budget despite declining revenues are the biggest issues facing lawmakers.

Culver tells the Register this is a real economic challenge and that people have to understand how serious the problem is for the state.
