Hines Found Guilty of Second Degree Murder

By Becky Ogann

CEDAR RAPIDS - Timothy Hines was found guilty of second degree murder in the stabbing death of Nathan Williams at the Linn County Courthouse on Thursday.

Hines had been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Williams on June 22, 2007, in the parking lot of a Road Ranger on First Avenue NE. The two men allegedly got into an argument over Hines' girlfriend, Mya Williams.

The Gazette reports Hines testified Wednesday he was scared for his life when he saw a silver handgun in the waistband of Nathan Williams' pants. He said he pulled out the utility knife he keeps on his belt when he saw Williams reaching for the gun. He just "swung" at Williams twice with the three-inch blade.

He stabbed Williams in chest and right side. The chest wound proved to be fatal. A pathologist testified it penetrated his aorta and he bled out, according to the Gazette.

Hines and Mya Williams, who was wanted as a material witness, alluded authorities for almost nine months. There were living in Davenport when they were taken into custody in March.
