CEDAR RAPIDS – A Cedar Rapids police officer has received the first-ever Kathleen Opdebeeck Award for Professional Excellence.

Officer Charity Hansel received the award for her work as a sex crime investigator with children.

The police chief said Officer Hansel's work with the Jetseta Gage case helped lead to a conviction for the young girl's killer.

Hansel says her job is tough, but very important.

"We need people to listen to what children have to say and to believe what they have to say and to stand between the predator and the victimized child to get the abuse stopped,” Hansel said.

Hansel received an award and a $300 grant to use for more training.
