350 Run Nearly Naked for Youth Clothing Drive

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- About 350 University of Iowa students and alumni ran a mile with barely any clothes on. It's the fifth annual Nearly Naked Mile in Iowa City. And despite the rainy, chilly weather, hundreds ran for a local youth organization.
"A mile was just enough for this time of day," said University of Iowa sophomore Shawn Paarmann.
That's because of the limited amount of clothing to cover each runner's body in less than perfect weather.
"It's very heartening to know that despite whether it's raining or cold, it's only a mile to make a difference for so many people," said Nearly Naked Mile Organizer Emily White.
These University of Iowa students and alumni donated the clothes they wore to the event and then ran in next to nothing. Those clothes go to Iowa City's United Action for Youth.
They have their clothing drive next week after this all the clothes will be transported to their base and we will help them out with the clothing drive next week," said Emily White.
And not having clothes is one thing many of the kids at the youth group know all too well.
"Kids who can't go out and shop and get new clothes like some of us who are more fortunate are able to," said United Action for Youth's Clothing Drive Organizer Elena Rodriguez.
This drive usually brings in some two thousand pounds of clothes. Clothes so kids who are dealing with teen pregnancy or unstable home lives can feel better and have one less thing to worry about.
"Kids didn't want to go to school because they didn't have either enough clothes or certain cool, popular brands and they did just not want to go so we said we can fix it," said Rodriguez.
So a partnership with the University and its brave students stride pass the finish line of another successful year.
"It's a small sacrifice, very small. It's great that we can donate to the less fortunate and help out someone who's in need," said Paarmann.
You can still donate to the United Action for Youth at a clothing drive at the youth center in Iowa City this Wednesday from 3:30pm to 6:30pm.
