MARION - A little snow couldn't stop hundreds of Turkey Trotters in Marion Saturday. The 16th annual run and walk usually benefits Horizons' youth programs. But, after the summer's flood damaged the agency's building, the money raised this year will go to all programs
Just in time for Thanksgiving, it's the annual Turkey Trot. But a little earlier than these turkeys wanted was the snow that dusted the ground before the run.
Janice Vogel's served as the event's crossing guard for years, and she says she doesn't remember having to warn people of this danger on the road before.
"A couple of people had a fall, but they get right back up and keep going," says Vogel.
Steve Carpenter and his wife took it slow today.
"Kind of slick. We're watching our feet as we go. If we fall down, I know we'll have help. But we're hoping that won't happen," says Carpenter.
Dogs, kids, plus the rest of the 1,300 participants braved the cold.
"It's beautiful. It's Iowa. It is pretty here today," says Robin Dullea, a participant.
"My friends drug me out here. But you know, we're pretty good friends, so I'll do anything she wants," says participant Cindy Kolosick.
Supporting a good cause and family members in the event are why the Carpenters came out.
"Our daughter and grandson are in this. They're running in this. they're very far up there, and we're back here," says Carpenter.
Even as Marion's snow plows and salting trucks made it for the first time this year, Vogel says better late than never. She stood her post for the last turkey trotting along.
