Regents Member Looks at Longer School Year

IOWA CITY (AP) - A member of the Iowa Board of Regents says a longer school year could be a way for the state to invest in education.

Michael Gartner says increasing the K-12 school year by 30 days could also be used as an economic tool to get companies to move to Iowa. He says when their employees' children graduate from high school in Iowa, they'll be "a year smarter" than if they were in other states.

Gartner talked about a longer school year during a regents' meeting this week on developing strategic plans for the regents' institutions.

Other topics include access for Iowa students; managing budgets, state appropriations and tuition; and improving the quality of education.

Another meeting is planned for February, followed by three public hearings before a plan is adopted in May.
