One Killed Two Vehicle Crash on I-80 Near Oxford

By Becky Ogann

IOWA COUNTY - One person is dead after a head-on crash on Interstate 80.

It happened in the westbound lanes near the Iowa County and Johnson County line.

The state patrol says an eastbound car driven by Russell Willard, 66, of Cedar Rapids crossed the median and collided with the van.

He died on scene.

A passenger in the car, Marilyn Willard, 63, of Cedar Rapids, and the driver of the van, Mary Moore, 61, of Missouri, were both injured.

Actually, yes, I would turn it in if that would keep the streets safer. I realize that most people dont intentionally try to kill themselves or thier wives, but you cant ignore the fact that older people do have a tendancy to die unexpectedly like this. And I agree with the teenager issue. The speed limit isnt the problem. The problem is the cars these days run everything for the driver automaticly. Not to mention the destractions (cells). But pulling people over for going 1 over is just stupid.

Here's another thought...I do agree that the elderly (especially over 80) are a hazard. However, teenagers are my main worry. They just don't have the experience. Of course, the people who recklessly go over the speed limit are also a worry.....and they know who they are.

Does anyone think that raising the speed limit to 70mph was a bad idea??? There has been a LOT of accidents on the interstate lately. I never was for raising the speed limit because EVERYONE tends to go over the limit anyway. What were they thinking in Des Moines? It is a fact that the higher the speed, the higher the accident rate.

Why should we take away drivers licenses based on age? That's as arbitrary as stopping cars because they're green. There are people in their 20s who should not be driving, and people in their 80s who are still sharp and safe drivers with no accidents for decades. This could have happened to a person in their 40s. Driving is dangerous. There are going to be accidents from time to time. All we can do is drive safely and reduce our risk.

Maybe the crash was caused because of an unforeseen heatlh issue. I also believe that is why they are called "accidents" I doubt his agenda included killing himself and injuring his wife and others

Maybe it was health related, think before you spout off at the mouth

Here's a thought....are you going to voluntarily turn in your license if and when you turn 65?? I'd rather ride with someone over 65 than under 25. You need to get your facts straight and remember that with some luck, you might live to be an old person someday.

... I've been hearing about all these old people who keep getting into accidents by crossing the center line. But the police's idea of fixing the problem is to pull people over that are going ONE mile over the speed limit. I've got an idea... how about we take away old peoples ability to drive?? If your over 65... get the hell off the road!! They cause more accidents then anything!! Lets get with the program here!
