Plane Crash in Iowa City

Staff Reports

By Justin Foss

IOWA CITY - Iowa City Police are investigating a plane crash late Monday night. The plane crashed around 8:15 p.m. along Edingale Drive, which is a residential area north of the Iowa City Airport.

The plane did not strike a house, but landed with its tail in the air. Witnesses said they rushed to help the man who was piloting the plane. They told us he suffered cuts and was not aware of what had just happened, but he was conscious. The man, who was the only person on board, was taken to a hospital for medical treatment. So far authorities have not released his name or details on his medical condition.

At this point the cause of the crash is unclear. Investigators were moving the plane around 10:30 Monday night. Stay with KCRG.com and KCRG-TV9 for continuing coverage of this story.

You might recall a fatal plane crash not far away from Monday's. That crash happened in June 2008, killing a two-year-old girl. It was an Angel Flight and the girl, Sydney Blanton, had been treated at University Hospitals for club foot. Sydney's mother and the pilot survived t hat crash.

I lived at The Lodge for 3 years during college, and that is right across the highway from the airport. I would see (not hear, so get off of that complaint) planes take off frequently. I did not once ever see a plane take off in the north or northwest direction, where they would need to climb relatively quickly to get over the hill. If they needed to go in that direction, they would take off in another direction, and then make a turn. So stop blaming the airport location for these incidents.

You're kidding me? I thought the CR airport was the smallest one I'd ever seen in my life. I just moved here from Chicago. How many terminals do they have? Wow, this blows my mind! Where next, maybe Swisher or Marion should get their own airports!!!! Ha ha ha!

Time for the residence near the airport to find a different place to live. One of these days a plane is going to crash through your house, then what?? The city will make YOU move before the airport gets moved, just look at the way they have been doing things lately!!!!

It's neat to see some many people involved with the FAA posting on here. Keep up the good work! In case you haven't been following, the previous 3 accidents were due to pilot error. Guess what? Pilot error doesn't equate to a problem with the airport itself. BTW, the airport is not loud, the runway is a significant distance from any home, and there's not a steep incline for any plane to climb to takeoff. The only danger has been the actual pilots, not the conditions or the airport.

The airplane was on approach to landing. It was not taking off over the "huge hillside."

They should definitely close the Iowa Citty airport most people I know think it is a true safety hazard not to mention the noise. This is the fourth plane crash in less than a year, which goes to show what a dangerous situation it is. The airport needs to be closed for the safety of the community. These pilots should be required to take off south not over the town, anyone can see thay would be a safer situation. Close the airport.

Hey bobby so you have the millions needed to change the runways huh?? Funny that airport was there long before the homes. Who's the smart ones? Would u build a house at the end of a runway???

This will continue to happen until the airport changes the runways or direction of takeoffs. It doesn't make much sense to take off with a huge hillside to climb up and over. I'm not a pilot but I can see that much!

When I heard this on KCRG, I was expecting the worst. "Glad" to see no one was killed and that it only involved one person.

Pretty crazy. People on the scene said the pilot was beat up but it sounded like he'd probably be okay, at least that's the impression I got.

I pulled up 5 minutes after the call came out. You could see a somewhat large plane crashed on Edingdale dr. It was at a 30 degree angle facing toward the Iowa City airport runway. I heard one person was extricated and sent to University Hospital. That the only person I heard was onboard. No smoke, no flames. Appeared not to have hit a house.
