Woman Sentenced to 40 Years in Frying Pan Attack

By Becky Ogann

GARNER (AP) - A Ventura woman accused of trying to kill her 81-year-old mother with a frying plan has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Valerie Hasbrouck pleaded guilty earlier this year to four counts of willful injury.

Authorities say the 47-year-old attacked her mother, Tressa Waddingham, on Dec. 3 at the mother's rural Ventura home in northern Iowa. They say Hasbrouck struck her mother four times with a frying pan.

She had pleaded not guilty to an initial charge of attempted murder.

Hasbrouck was sentenced to 10 years on each of the willful injury charges. The judge ordered the sentences to be served consecutively.

Unfortunately, frying "plan" would not be picked up by spell check. Plan is a word last I checked. They just need a better editor/proofreader.

I agree with 10:26 AM. Frying pans are too dangerous for the public to use. They can be used as a weapon plus they have been associated with household fires. The govenment should step in to save us from this clear and present danger.

This is horrible - who attacks an 81 year old person? In regard to 17 who wrote maybe she was intoxicated or didn't realize it was her mom and either way "I think she got screwed" - are you kidding me? This woman hit an 81 yr old 4 times with a frying pan - how did she get screwed? She pled guilty - that means she admits she did it. I hope the 81 year old is ok and cuts her daughter out of her life.

Come on, ya'll, let's crowd up those prisons! They're not crowded enough with those who commit victim-less crimes, like prostitution and drug use. But seriously... 40 YEARS? 10 years for each count of willful injury... what the **** is wrong with these courts? Smack your mom in the head with a frying pan and get 10 years. Ugh, and with the "formal proceedings" the court goes through, I can only imagine how wonky and lopsided the trial was. Chalk another one up for excessive punishment.

Sounds like a "flash-in-the-pan" story. Seriously, though, that mother could have done something to deserve it...like care about her daughter. What a nut job.

This is a very sad case but maybe it's time to outlaw frying pans......guns kill........knives kill.........drugs kill......cars kill....and now maybe even frying pans kill. This is a sad world. I hope the mother is ok???? It doesn't say anything about her injuries.
