Plane Makes Emergency Landing Near Winterset

By Becky Ogann

WINTERSET (AP) - Officials say no one was injured when a small plane made an emergency landing on a highway near Winterset.

The Madison County sheriff's office says the plane landed shortly before 10 p.m. on Thursday on U.S. Highway 169 about five miles north of town.

According to the sheriff's office, employees at the Des Moines airport tower notified sheriff's officials that the plane had flames coming from its engine.

The sheriff's office says the pilot, Timothy Gerber of Omaha, Neb., attempted to reach the Winterset airport but was forced to land on the highway, where the Cessna 208 blocked both lanes of traffic.

The plane was towed to the Winterset airport, where investigators planned to inspect it on Friday.
