Fired Iowa Lawyer says Report Blindsided Him

By Becky Ogann

IOWA CITY (AP) - Fired University of Iowa general counsel Marcus Mills says he was unfairly singled out in a report on the university's response to a sexual assault case.

Mills told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he wrote a 10-page response to university President Sally Mason and the Iowa Board of Regents on Tuesday - but was fired hours later along with Phillip Jones, the vice president for student services.

Mills says he would've done things differently in retrospect, but says he disagrees with his portrayal in the report.

Mills says he spoke with one of the investigators doing the report for about 80 minutes, but says there was no follow-up and that he was unprepared for the report's evaluation of him.
